General English Proficiency Training Enrollment Information
General English is a required component of the general education curriculum. Students must complete one course from each of the two categories: Practical and Applied. Each category includes three proficiency levels. Typically, Practical courses are offered in the first semester, and Applied courses in the second semester. During the curriculum transition period, some Applied courses may also be available in the first semester.
If one of the required courses has been waived, please refer to the transcript or course exemption record to confirm which category of the other course must be completed. Enrolling in two courses of the same category will not be counted toward graduation credits.
Enrolling in a course above your assigned proficiency level requires one of the following:
1) Demonstrated strong academic performance in the first semester and instructor-approved placement adjustment.
2) Submission of a valid external English proficiency test score that meets the level requirement of the intended course.
How to Enroll in Courses
Register directly through the course selection system according to your assigned proficiency level. If the number of students exceeds the course capacity, selection will be determined by the system.
Prior to course registration, students must review their individual graduation requirement checklist to ensure alignment with degree requirements (to verify which course category remains to be completed).
Additional Notes
General English courses aim to develop students’ core English competencies and are required components of CCU’s general education program. These courses fall under the category of English for General Purposes (EGP). Unlike traditional English training that focuses solely on listening and reading, CCU’s General English courses emphasize productive skills—speaking and writing—to improve students’ confidence and practical language use.
According to Article 9 of CCU’s credit exemption policy, applications for course exemption must be submitted once only, no later than one week before the add/drop deadline of the first semester of the student’s entry year. However, to encourage students to obtain English proficiency certification early, those who meet the 4-credit exemption criteria based on their second-year first-semester test results may apply for exemption of 2 credits for the General English course offered in the second semester of the first year. All exemption deadlines follow the schedule published by the Office of Academic Affairs.
Students who have completed or received exemptions for General English courses and wish to further strengthen their language skills are encouraged to apply for the Applied Language Studies Certificate Program, which offers systematic development of academic and workplace English proficiency.
