English Learning via Case Analysis (ELCA) Workshop

 Dr. Keith SAI-TAO TONG 

Dr. Keith Tong has an MA in Applied Linguistics and a PhD in Educational Management, with 40 years’ experience in language education in Hong Kong. He has been teaching in the Centre for Language Education at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), and had been responsible for the development and implementation of language courses for both undergraduates and postgraduates at the university from 1996-2019, as an associate director and then as a director. His areas of interest include EAP (English for Academic Purposes), CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning), and Language Assessment.

Intended Learning Outcomes for Participants

By the end of the workshop, student participants will be able to

  1. critically read a business case and identify key issues highlighted in it1
  2. analyse business and management situations, articulate view-points and evaluate options for addressing issues
  3. present case analysis findings and recommend actions in a simulated business presentation
  4. apply Business and Management knowledge and concepts to the analysis of business cases
  5. develop sensitivity to inter-cultural management issues
  6. develop teamwork and communication skills in business English context through case analysis

Syllabus of English Learning via Case Analysis (ELCA) Workshop

  • Introduction to Case Analysis and Mini-case analysis
  • Initial Analysis of Business Case
  • Discussion on Management Styles & Culture
  • Discussion on Cross-cultural Management and Presentation Skills
  • Group project based on case Analysis 
  • Debriefing on Case Analysis and Presentations


How to Apply

  1. Application date: Nov. 28-Dec. 20, 2019
  2. Course takers of ALS program: at least one course taken (Including 2019 Fall)
  3. English proficiency requirements (one of the followings): TOEIC Listening & Reading 780 or above; TOEIC Speaking/Writing 160/160 or above; IELTS 6.0 or above, TOEFL iBT 85 or above
  4. Interest in business management related field or possess knowledge of case analysis
